of New York. Fifteen volumes + one index volume. 16 volumes in all,
each measuring 8 x 11 x 3" and each weighing approximately 8 lbs.
Condition: internally absolutely pristine, complete and tight. All
hinges sturdy. Some rear top corners have been reinforced with
bookbinder's tape; otherwise, the original publisher's 3/4 black
morocco and green cloth binding is in very, very good condition.
Gilt spines are bright, all edges marbled as are endpapers.
The encyclopedia project was by subscription and this set has
an original certificate signed by Robert Appleton and made out
to Joseph Thomas as a "Patron of Record in recognition of his
cooperation and payment in advance for the complete work while
it was in the process of building." Dated in New York, January
l913.
